If you have a business that requires you to ship out products, then you are likely to need a scale to weigh your parcels for freight purposes.
No one likes to pay for excess shipping charges, so having a quality scale with an accurate weight will save you time and money.
As all businesses are not the same, there are various scales to suit different purposes.
When looking for a shipping scale, consider the sizes and weights of the items you need to measure. It is better to overestimate rather than underestimate the size and weight of the items you plan to weigh. In fact, it is recommended that you get a scale that is able to take on about 20% more than your average capacity.
Shipping or freight scales can generally be grouped into three categories:
a) Light duty range scales
If your business ships only small items or parcels, you can consider small scales. The Ohaus SD series, for example, is ideal for small parcels, and it comes in various platform sizes and capacities up to 200kg.
The SD series come with a remote indicator with two tactile function keys, and features durable painted steel treaded and non-treaded platforms. Its flexible mounting capabilities and battery operation makes it ideal for shipping and receiving, general commercial as well as industrial weighing applications.
b) Medium duty range scales
For something more robust that can take on heavier parcels and provide greater accuracy, go for medium duty range scales such as the Ohaus Defender 2000 or Ohaus Defender 3000 series.
The Ohaus Defender 2000 series is constructed from painted carbon steel frame and stainless steel weighing pan, and is designed for light to medium duty applications. Other features include a red LED display that can be viewed even in locations with less than optimal lighting, IP65 load cell, and an internal rechargeable battery.
The Ohaus Defender 3000 series is designed for either dry or wet applications up to 300kg, and is approved for trade use. It is available in two styles - an ABS plastic housing indicator with painted steel scale frame, or an IP66 stainless steel indicator with stainless steel scale frame. Other features include built-in RS232 interface, multiple weighing units, and a 25mm LCD backlit display.
c) Heavy duty range scales
The heavy duty range scales are ideal for those who constantly need to weigh large cartons and items up to pallet size. Smaller scales cannot weigh oversized packages accurately, so it is important to buy a right-sized scale for your application.
Constructed from powder coated steel, the Nuweigh IH1949 pallet scale is perfect for all your freight and shipping needs. It is also approved for trade use, with non standard platform sizes and capacities available to order. Other features include dual range weighing, 4 x 1500kg load cells, optional indicator stand and optional protection frame. It is also available in fully galvanized or stainless steel.
